Three films that we watched, Inside Job, Why We Fight, and Life & Debt all examined the goals and methods of US/Western power in the international economic system in their own ways. Inside Job and Why We Fight are more focused on the United States while Life & Debt talked about the Western super powers in general.
In Inside Job, numerous amount of people are interviewed in order to examine and breakdown what happened during and what caused the 2008 financial crisis. Several investment banks, financial conglomerates, insurance companies, and rating agencies together causes the financial crisis. In order to make more money, collateraized debt obligations were sold to investors have the rating agencies gave them AAA ratings. Many people were given loans they couldn't repay and so the money borrowed by banks didn't match with the banks' own assets. Collateralised debt obligations started to collapse and banks went in debt. What the United States agencies and companies did totally jeopardised the global economy and these top executives still got away unpunished. This shows how the United States can dominate other countries by jeopardising the world and still be unpunished.
In Why We Fight, the United States military have been examined closely. After World War II, America established and continuously built on its military due to the fear of spread of communism. Eisenhower argued that America's military-industrialized complex will create a crisis when a president decides to use these military resources as a way to protect America's financial interest. In the system, American leaders are urged and pressured to continue this system of advancing its military. After the military is built up, America started to use these weapons because otherwise what's the point of creating all these weapons. Eventually, America make it like it's spreading democracy, peace, freedom, and liberty. Enemies of the United States became the enemies of freedom, or the other way around. People who didn't impose democracy became the enemy of United States and its allies and therefore the United States must interfere. The United States made itself the country that brings prosperity to countries, and the United States will do so by repositioning itself as the country people have to obey. Despite of the question on whether democracy is good, the United States, as a global power and dominating force, is able to interfere with other country's business just because it can.
In Life and Debt, the financial situation and economy of Jamaica had been examined. This movie perfectly portrayed how the US/Western power are able to keep a country like Jamaica forever in poverty. After Jamaica's independence from Britain, its economy is focused solely on agricultural goods. However, a well developed country like the United States is able to subsidise the agricultural products in the US, which cut down the prices of all agricultural goods and make Jamaican goods less competitive. After the liberalisation of Jamaica's company, foreign developed countries started to come in and established free economic zones.
The ultimate goals of US/Western power is to make money. Historically, people make money by violence and conquering. Now, people started to do that
